Self-aligning roller bearings (spherical roller bearings) carry two rows of rollers on a single sphered outer raceway. Because the outer ring raceway is spherical, the inner ring and shaft can deflect or be misaligned relative to the housing without loading the rollers on their edges — the bearing effectively centres itself. This is what makes the design the default choice for shafts that bend under load, for long shafts with several supports, and for applications where accurate housing alignment cannot be guaranteed.

Design features

• Automatic self-alignment — permits angular misalignment of roughly 1° to 2.5° depending on series and load, without loss of rating life.
• High radial capacity — two rows of rollers give the highest radial load capacity per unit width of any common bearing type.
• Axial load in both directions — unlike a tapered roller bearing, a single bearing takes thrust either way, which simplifies the arrangement.
• Tolerant of shock load — the line contact and robust cage design suit vibrating screens, crushers and mills.

What CA and W33 mean

The suffixes on these bearings matter more than most buyers expect:

• CA — one-piece machined brass cage, inner-ring guided, symmetrical rollers. The standard choice for heavy and shock-loaded duties.
• CC / E — pressed steel cage, roller guided. Lighter and cheaper, fine for normal loads.
• MB — two-piece machined brass cage.
• W33 — annular groove and three lubrication holes in the outer ring, so grease can be fed to the middle of the bearing. Essential on large sizes and on applications where relubrication is done from the housing.
• K — tapered bore (1:12), for mounting with an adapter sleeve on a plain shaft.

Series and size range

FRSZC supplies the 22200 and 22300 series in CA/W33 execution as standard:

• 22200 series — 22205 CA/W33 to 22240 CA/W33 (spherical roller bearing, moderate width)
• 22300 series — 22308 CA/W33 to 22323 CA/W33 (wider, higher load capacity)

Other series including 23000, 23100, 24000 and 24100 can be quoted on request, as can tapered-bore (K) versions and adapter sleeves.

Mounting and lubrication

Self-alignment does not remove the need for correct fit: too loose an inner ring will creep and wear the shaft, too tight will crack the inner ring. Where the bearing is mounted with an adapter sleeve, the reduction in internal clearance during tightening has to be measured, not guessed. Applications

Spherical roller bearings are used in vibrating screens, jaw and cone crushers, conveyors, fans and blowers, paper machines, rolling mills, gearboxes and heavy handling equipment. Related reading: coal mining machinery bearings, conveyor roller bearings and suspension bearings.

Selection notes

Because the design tolerates misalignment, it is often specified as a fix for a problem that is really an alignment or stiffness problem elsewhere. If a spherical roller bearing keeps failing in the same position, check shaft deflection, housing fit and lubrication path before moving to a larger size.
